Monster High is a line of dolls launched by Mattel in 2010. The dolls are likenesses of characters from the very popular Monster High series of YouTube webisodes, Nickelodeon TV specials, and books.
The dolls are just under a foot tall (male dolls are a bit taller than the female ones). They have characteristics typical of animated characters -- big heads and eyes, and small noses. The dolls are made from a combination of plastic and PVC, and each head mold is one of a kind. They have differing skin tones suiting the monsters that they are, and have hair made of saran and other fibers (although most of the male dolls have molded hair). The dolls' bodies are articulated -- their legs and arms bend at the joints -- and their forearms and hands can be removed to make it easier to change the clothes they're wearing.
Each doll's clothes are unique and reflect its individual character. They also have physical characteristics that come from their monster parents -- ears, bandages, fangs, and stitches, for example.
The dolls are different from other fashion dolls in that they're inspired by monsters from horror and sci-fi movies and fiction. The characters themselves are related to famous monsters like zombies, warewolves, Frankenstein's monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy.

Monster High is a series of books, webisodes and TV specials featuring monsters as the stories' heroes. The setting of the stories is, appropriately, Monster High -- a fictional high school where everybody (students and staff) is related to monsters from popular horror, suspense, and sci-fi fiction.
The primary characters tend to be children of monsters made famous by Universal in films produced in the early- to mid-part of last century. The Universal Movies included Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Werewolf of London, Son of Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Wolf Man. The impact of these iconic films has been extended to a new generation with Monster High -- you'll recognize many of the main characters of those films as the parents of Monster High students.

The merchandise line extends beyond the dolls. There's also clothing, accessories, stationery, bags, toys and electronics. A couple free apps are available for iOS devices, and there's a video game available for Wii and DS platforms.
In addition to the webisodes, TV specials have aired on Nickelodeon -- "Monster High: New Ghoul @ School" aired in October, 2010, and "Monster High: Fright On" aired in October, 2011.
A feature length movie is in development by Universal Pictures and the producers of Smallville.
The books in the series are authored by Lisi Harrison, who also wrote The Clique and Alpha series. The books are set in a different universe from the webisodes, at Merston High in Salem. The books' plots revolve around the monsters trying to go about their lives, trying to date like regular teenagers, and avoiding being exposed as monsters to a world full of normies. There are characters that appear only in novels, and not in the webisodes or TV specials.
The first Monster High novel was released in September, 2010. The story focused on Melody Carver and Frankie Stein. The second book, The Ghoul Next Door, was released in March, 2011, and featured Cleo de Nile. The third book, Where There's a Wolf There's a Way, was released in September, 2011, and featured Clawdeen Wolf. The fourth book in the series, Back and Deader than Ever, will feature Draculaura.
